By James Watts Low carb diets, though popular, have met with much controversy. This type of diet simply doesnt fit with what the American Heart Association recommends. But the success that so many people have had with low carb diets can really make you wonder if the food pyramid that we all learned in grade school, has been wrong all along. Some carbohydrates give us energy while others actually make us more sluggish once we lose the sugar buzz. Those carbs also tend to make us crave more of the same thing and it becomes an unstoppable cycle. So where the food pyramid tells us that we need to eat carbs, it doesnt tell us which ones are going to be good for us. Some low carb diets go to the extreme and cut out all carbohydrates for extended periods of time. Our bodies were not designed to tolerate this deprivation and the response is ketosis. What happens is that your body metabolizes fats for energy instead of carbohydrates, just as someone whose diabetes goes untreated. It sounds logical though, right? Cut out the carbohydrates and your body is going to dig into that fat reserve for energy. But safety and long term health come into play here. You will certainly lose weight this way, but at what cost? Many people have tried every diet under the sun and finally found a satisfying and successful solution in low carb diets. That doesnt mean they are for everyone. You should always check with your doctor before beginning any new weight loss program. Flexible Spending Accounts- A Great Employee Benefit

By Kathy Swann If you are lucky enough to work for a company that offers Flexible Spending Accounts, be sure to take advantage of this great benefit that will put more money back into your pocket. If you or your dependents have any medical or dental expenses not covered under your health insurance during the year, you can use this benefit to pay for them with pre-tax dollars. Simply figure the amount of out-of-pocket medical expenses you will have for the year, sign up for your companys FSA by the deadline, save your receipts and submit them for reimbursement as you incur them. This will save you on taxes. In order to pay fewer taxes, you have to reduce your taxable income. Participating in an FSA can help you achieve this because its deducted from your paycheck before your taxes are calculated. This reduces your taxable income and therefore reduces the taxes taken from your paycheck. Examples of some medical expenses you can submit: Co-pays for office visits Dental check-ups & fillings (but not cosmetic dental work) Prescriptions Eyeglasses and contact lenses, including cleaning solutions Certain over the counter medicines such as for cough & cold Be sure to save your medical receipts during the year, and submit them regularly instead of waiting until year-end. This puts more money back in your pocket each month. The best advantage for using an FSA is that you can begin to use the balance before it has been deducted from your paycheck. One year I had extensive dental work done on the third of January, submitted the receipt and got my reimbursement before it had even been deducted from my first paycheck of the year! This is a very important point to understand- if you cannot spend your balance by the end of the year, you cannot carry that balance over into the new year and you forfeit that money. Another important tip to know- if you terminate your employment during the year, you can only submit expenses that were performed up to your last date of work. For this reason specifically, I recommend that you schedule your medical visits early in the year so you can begin to reap the benefit. If you were to be laid off during the year and hadnt used up your balance, you wind up losing the money that was left in your account. Find out if your employer offers Flexible Spending Accounts as part of their benefit package, and plan to take advantage of this terrific benefit next year. Ask your HR department for details. Is Astigmatism Correctible

Astigmatism is caused by the irregular shape of an eye cornea or lens. Rather than a round cornea or lens of a healthy eye, someone suffering from astigmatism has an oblong one. This problem can be attributed to a number of factors, but most often it is an inherited trait and cannot be prevented. In other words, look at your mother and father. If they both have astigmatism, it's likely you and your children will also face the same vision problems. There are three common corrections for astigmatism: eyeglasses, contact lens, or refractive surgery. Eyeglasses
In most cases, people suffering from this problem will find that eyeglasses will correct the problem without the side effects normally related to contact lens. Toric Contact Lenses
Since stigmatism requires toric lenses, a special type of contacts that make it necessary for the lenses to float free in the eye to adjust for the curvature of the cornea, dry eyes can be more than just irritating.
